Rescue Story

Gudaitienė, Juzė

Juzė Gudaitienė lived in the town of Vilkaviškis with her husband and their young son. From the beginning of the German occupation until the liberation, Gudaitienė’s home was a shelter for Itzhak and Sara Stein, residents of Vilkaviškis and Juzė’s prewar acquaintances. Fearing for Gudaitienė’s life, the Steins never stayed in her home for extended periods, but also hid elsewhere. In times of immediate danger, the Gudaitienė home was an address to which the Steins could flee, knowing they would be given shelter there. After the war, Itzhak and Sara Stein immigrated to Israel.
